Welcome to Bulgaria!

Founded in the 7th century, the Republic of Bulgaria is one of the oldest states on the European continent. The name Bulgaria is derived from the Bulgars, a tribe of Turkic origin that founded the First Bulgarian Empire.

Bulgaria covers a territory of 110,994 square kilometers (42,855 sq. mi), and is the sixteenth-largest country in Europe. It occupies the eastern portion of the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. The country is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and North Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east.

The Bulgarian language belongs to the South Slavic group, along with Serbo-Croatian and Slovene. Bulgarians use the Cyrillic alphabet.

In 2021 the population of Bulgaria is estimated to 6,520,314. The population is fairly homogeneous, with Bulgarians making up 84.6% of all, followed by 8.4% Turks, 4.4% Roma and 2.6% others.

The majority of religious Bulgarians are adherents of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Minority religious groups include Muslims, Protestants, Catholics, Jews, and Gregorian Armenians.

The Bulgarian Lev (BGN) is the official currency in the country.
